Royal Opera House and Royal Ballet Dance Dynamic
In September, children visited the Royal Opera house to watch a school's matinee performance of Manon which was generoulsy funded by the Taylor Family Foundation. Following on from this, we applied to take part in the Royal Opera House Dance Dynamic Program, which supports the delivery of dance in primary schools. Cherry Grove were accepted onto the project in November and are the only school in the North West to be involved with this project. Teachers took part in workshops, which enabled them to observe best practice and bring this back to the children. Schools were then asked to create a dance piece with their students which would be showcased in Covent Garden at the Royal Opera House. As we are working with Unicef to become a Rights respecting School, we decided to base our dance around the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child and looked at Article 38: 'Governments should do everything they can to protect children in times of war'. Rehersals followed, with 37 children aged between 7-11 and we were visited by a Royal Ballet Teacher, Madeline, who gave us advice and suggestions to improve our piece. On the 23rd March, the children performed their dance at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden along with 10 other schools. They were absolutley majestic and an absolute credit to the school! Cherry Grove hopes to continue it's participation and links with the ROH next academic year.
