At Cherry Grove we are extremely lucky to have a hard working and dedicated group of governors. They provide a wealth of knowledge and ideas which they use to guide and improve the school.

Debbie Tomkinson - Chair of Governors (Co-opted Governor)

Responsibilities: Finance Committee, Governor Training Liaison, Safer Recruitment, Health & Safety, Reading SDP Focus Link, HT Performance Management, Appeals Panel

Appointed: January 2019: Term ends: January 2023

Register of interests:  Clerk - Cheshire Acadamies Trust, Self-employed school governance clerk, Secretary of the Cheshire West Governance Association (CWGA)

I have been a governor since January 2011 and have two children at Cherry Grove.

I have two children and am a full-time parent to them. I am a qualified solicitor and before becoming a full-time mum I was Litigation Manager for a large Tour Operator.

In my spare time I enjoy reading and going to the theatre and, thanks to my son, I have recently rekindled my childhood passion for swimming.

Michael Bousfield - Head Teacher

I am, of course, privileged to be the Headteacher of Cherry Grove. I have been a teacher for 20 years and this is my second headship. I have also served on the Governors of 5 different primary schools, so have a lot of perspective when it comes to working with Governors. I can assure you that Cherry Grove has some of the most talented, committed and hardworking Governors that I have come across. Children, parents and even teachers and school staff often have very little idea about the work of the Governors, so it is very positive that the team at Cherry Grove are developing this area of the website to throw some light on the work they do for the school and the impact they have. We should all be very grateful for the (unpaid!) work that these people do for our children.

Richard Bowman - Co-opted Governor

Responsibilities: Chair of Finance Committee, Pay Panel, HT Performance Management, School Website Compliance, Maths SDP Focus Link

Appointed: February 2013: Term ends: October 2020

I became a parent governor in February 2013 and my children are both at Cherry Grove.

I went to school in Chester and studied for my degree in Newcastle and, following several years working around the UK and overseas with my work as a Quantity Surveyor, I now work for the local water company serving Wrexham and Chester.

I spend my spare time with my family, play golf badly, and have recently enrolled on a Thai cooking course.

Tanya Wallwork - Co-opted Governor

Responsibilities: Inclusion Governor – Safeguarding, Disadvantaged Pupils, CIC/LAC, SEN, PP, Resilience & Engagement (SDP Focus Link)

Appointed: January 2019: Term ends: January 2023

I joined Cherry Grove as a governor in February 2013. My children, Mia and Ollie, are pupils at this school.

I am a mental health therapist currently working with people suffering common mental health disorders and have been involved with psychology for the past 10 years. I have a degree in psychology and a masters degree in clinical psychology, with previous jobs in both dementia and forensic psychiatry.

In my spare time, when I am not playing the role of therapist or counsellor to my family and friends, I enjoy spending time with my two children exploring the many amazing sights in the UK and fuelling my addiction to caffeine in many coffee shops.

Beth Hacking (Deputy Headteacher) - Co-opted Governor

Responsibilities:  Finance Committee, School Website Compiance

Appointed: May 2019: Term ends: May 2023

I have been a teacher at Cherry Grove since September 2012, and became a staff governor in May 2013. After graduating from Nottingham University with a degree in History and Politics I joined Bank of America in 2004 on a graduate scheme. During the several years I was there I worked in a variety of business development roles specialising in governance, product and project management.

After leading a local Brownie pack for two years, I realised my vocation was working with children to achieve exciting and valuable outcomes. Volunteering in local schools confirmed my passion to teach and I decided to retrain, gaining my PGCE at Chester University. I am very committed to achieving high standards at Cherry Grove and have been delighted with the warm welcome I have received since joining the school. The talented and hardworking staff, wonderful children and clearly dedicated governors are an asset to the school and area.

In my limited free time I am a (fair-weather!) member of a running club, and enjoy hill-walking, cinema and eating large amounts of food with friends and family!

Monica Robinson - Local Authority Governor

Responsibilities: Pay Panel, Safer Recruitment, Early Years & Girls SDP Focus Link

Appointed: April 2018: Term ends: April 2022

I was appointed as a Local Authority Governor in January 2014 and soon realised that I had joined a very committed and effective governing body.  As I have some free time I enjoy the opportunity to volunteer in school.  I help to run cookery sessions every week and when required like to support the teaching staff with workshops, field trips etc.  It is a privilege to be associated with Cherry Grove where all the staff and governors work hard to provide the very best education for all the children in their care.

Before I retired in 2012, I worked for a Chester based Housing Association.  I have two children who went to local schools and who now live and work in Manchester.  As well as doing some voluntary work I try to spend time with my new grandson.  I enjoy walking and cycling and am a member of the Chester Cycling Campaign - our aim being to make Chester a cycle friendly city and to encourage more people to get around by bike.

Zoe Lochlin - Co-opted Governor

Responsibilities: Early Years & Girls SDP Focus Link

Appointed: January 2019: Term Ends: January 2023

Register of Intinerests: Teaching Assistant at JH Godwin Primary School and Executive Member of the Cheshire West Governance Association (CWGA)

As a parent of two children attending Cherry Grove, I welcome the opportunity to support the excellent work of the school. One of our most important roles as parents is to support the education of our children therefore this opportunity to take on a more active role within the school, contributing to and maintaining the school’s high standards is one in which I look forward to supporting.

Previously I have worked in a number of different roles both professionally within the Early Years and Education and additionally on a voluntary basis with the NCT, where I have been able to develop my passion for finding new exciting ways to help children to thrive in a secure, welcoming and positive environment. I have had vast experience working with local authorities, monitoring and developing action plans in order to improve standards and plan for the future outcomes of all children and their families.

Amy Wooldridge - Vice Chair of Governors (Co-Opted Governor)

Responsibilities: HT Performance Management, Pay Panel, Data Protection (GDPR), Leadership SDP Focus Link

Appointed: March 2018: Term Ends: March 2022

After 2 years as a governor I'm still being surprised by the depth and quality of involvement that the governing body has at Cherry Grove.

I have two sons, both at Cherry Grove.

Away from school, my experience is in a variety of financial services roles including Knowledge Management, Business Development and Compliance.  My current focus is Data Privacy at MBNA.

Sarah Connolly - Parent Governor

Responsibilities: Finance Committee, Appeals Panel, Governor Training Liaison

Appointed: June 2018 Term Ends: June 2022

Register of Interests: Employed by Concordia Multi Academy Trust, Wolverham Primary School & Nursery, Ellesmere Port

I began my term as Parent Governor in May 2018, and it is my first governing role. I have two children, one at Cherry Grove and I was a pupil here myself in the late 1980’s.

I qualified with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants in 2006 and have worked in accountancy practice in Chester since 1999. A portion of my current clientbase are Academy Trusts and I also work with several Property Management and Service Charge companies and a range of other businesses in various industries.

I enjoy food, baking and cooking and fortunately also like to run and enter running events in the local area.

I hope my appointment as Governor constitutes a positive addition to the governing body and I will endeavour to do my best on behalf of the school.

Sian Collinson - Parent Governor

Appointed: February 2018 Term Ends: February 2023

Responsibilities: Appeals Panel, Writing SDP Focus Link

Register of interests: Consultant, The Literacy Company

I am delighted to be a parent governor at Cherry Grove which my son has attended since 2014.

Following a stint in Theatre in Education after University, I have worked as a Primary School teacher in Cheshire and Wirral for 12 years. This has given me a wealth of experience across all age groups which will hold me in good stead for this new role.

As my career developed I started to take on consultancy work and in 2017 began working with The Literacy Company to support teachers and children with all aspects of the English curriculum. Initially combining this with my role in the classroom, I now work just for them and love the variety of what I do and the people I meet. It is a pleasure to be involved with so many different schools and to play a part in making a difference within education.

In my spare time I love to read and always end the day with a good book.

Interested in becoming a governor?

School governors are people who want to make a positive contribution to children’s education.  It is an immensely rewarding role that allows you to be involved in raising standards within school.

The role of the Governing Body is:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

  • Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and

  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

We do this by getting to know the school and the wider educational context, reading meeting paperwork and attending meetings where we ask questions to ensure that the best possible decisions are made for the benefit of the children in the school, attending training and development events to improve our skills and knowledge and adhering to the Governors’ Charter.

The minimum commitment expected of a governor is that they attend monthly Full Governing Body meetings.  These are usually held on a Thursday evening.  Most governors also take on additional responsibilities, eg Safeguarding governor or Maths governor.

In addition to being over 18 years of age, governors need a strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for children, the inquisitiveness to question and analyse, and the willingness to learn.  They need good inter-personal skills, appropriate levels of literacy in English, and sufficient numeracy skills to understand basic data.  There are certain circumstances in which a person is disqualified from holding or continuing to hold office as a governor and they are listed in the document at the bottom of this page.

If a governor incurs reasonable expenses such as travel costs as a result of performing their duties as a governor, they can be reimbursed in line with the Governors Allowance policy available on the policy page of the website.

The categories of governor are appointed as follows:

  • The Headteacher is automatically entitled to be a governor

  • Parent Governors are appointed by the parents at the school

  • Staff Governors are appointed by the staff at the school

  • Local Authority Governors are appointed by the Local Authority

  • Co-opted Governors are appointed by the Governing Body

You can find out more about the role of a governor on the National Governance Assocation website
